Data viewer - grouping columns by date period

David Stevenson -

When you create a data viewer report that is cross-tabbed by data type you get a single column for each data series or calculated column for the entire report period by default.  A common requirement is to split this total value into periods and show each data series as a group of columns per period.

For example if you are reporting on billing plans - planned value and sales invoices - invoiced amount, with a calculated column to show the difference, and your report period is an enmtire year, you might want to break the annual totals out by month.

So you would go from a single total stype report like this:

To a month by month comparison like this:

To achieve this split you have to add date as a column:

You will also be adding data type as a column in order to achieve the cross-tab by data type, so you must ensure that the cross-tab order is correct.  Make sure date is the first cross-tab, then data type.  If you cross-tab by data type then by data you will get all the date columns grouped together by data type, so Planned vale for Jan, Feb, Mar etc, then Invoiced amount for Jan, Feb, Mar etc.  You can change the cross-tab order by simple drag and drop:
